FANCY CUTS® SHINGLE

panel specifications

1. Product Description.

Composed of kiln dried Western Red Cedar, permanently laminated to exterior type plywood to form self-aligning 8-foot panels. Shakertown® Fancy Cuts shingle panels go up as easily as lap siding, providing authentic decorative shingle coverage in less time, with less labor and less waste. For exterior and interior use.

Finishes: Manufactured in unfinished natural Western Red Cedar. Products may be sealed or stained in the field.

Basic Uses: For exterior siding on walls or mansard roofs with minimum 20/12 pitch (60 degree slope). For decorative shingle treatment on interior and exterior surfaces. All Fancy Cuts panel styles are interchangeable to allow a vast array of designs and patterns.

Limitations: Panels may not be used on exterior surfaces where the slope is less than 20/12. Not to be used as a shear panel, although it may be used over shear panel.

Composition and Materials: Fancy Cuts panels are composed of genuine Western Red Cedar bonded with exterior adhesives (under pressure) to exterior grade plywood. The bonding method of full surface gluing meets the weather test and other requirements for exterior plywood as specified under U.S. PS 1-95. Insulation values up to R-1.13 are superior to most other siding materials.

Nails: Use of proper nails is very important. Use hot dipped galvanized or equally rust-resistant 7D nails for penetration of studs to at least 1/2".

Dimensions: Each Fancy Cuts panel is 96" long with a 5" high plywood backing (up to 10% of material in each bundle may be shorter than 96"). Overall panel height varies with individual patterns. Panel exposure is 5", although actual exposure ranges from 3-3/4" to 6-1/4" when using a combination of patterns.

Packaging: All Fancy Cuts panels are packaged in 6-panel bundles. Each bundle covers 20 sq. ft. Five bundles cover 100 sq. ft.

Fire-Resistance: Fancy Cuts panels qualify for a one-hour fire-resistive wall assembly when used as an alternative to 3/4" drop siding under UBC Table 7-B, section 18-1.1. The natural, untreated siding materials, in all sizes, also meet the requirements of ASTM E-84 for Class B Flame Spread Rating. Fire retardant treated Fancy Cuts panels provide a Class A Flame Spread Rating. For additional details see Technical Bulletins 5001 and 5002.

Preservative Treatment: Fancy Cuts panels are available with CCA preservative treatment. The treatment provides protection from fungal decay.

2. Technical Data.

Applicable Standards: Fancy Cuts panels meet the criteria for listing, evaluation and/or compliance with the following regional, national and international building codes:

Specific data relative to one-hour fire-resistive wall assembly, Fire Marshal's approval for interior Tunnel Test ASTM E-84 (flame spread rate), and other test data are available on request.

3. Installation.

Preparatory Work: Fancy Cuts panels shall be applied to solid or spaced nailable sheathing. After framing is completed, Fancy Cuts panels should be installed over approved building paper. Manufacturer recommends furring out the bottom course of siding with 1/2" x 1" wood strips. This allows for canting of the first course of siding and determines level line.

Determine prior to framing layout which corner treatment is to be utilized. Fancy Cuts panels may be mitered at corners or corner boards may be used.

Methods: Installation should be in strict accordance with the manufacturer's written recommendation, including working from the lowest level up to the top of the wall area. Rust resistant 7D nails should be used to penetrate the studs at least 1/2" and should be driven flush with the siding surface.

A 1/16" spacing between ends of panels is required in order to allow for expansion due to natural humidity.

4. Availability and Cost.

5. Warranty.

Shakertown 1992, Inc., provides a 10 year limited product warranty against manufacturing defects.

6. Maintenance.

Shakertown Fancy Cuts panels, when properly applied, require little maintenance. The natural preservatives in genuine Western Red Cedar shingles make Fancy Cuts a very durable material. They will darken or change color at different rates, depending on the amount of direct sun they receive. On an interior wall, any section exposed to sunlight will change color, just as wood furniture, wallpaper or paint will. Shakertown recommends finishing with a quality oil-based stain to maximize the product life in outdoor sidewall applications. (Refer to Technical Bulletin 4001, Stains and Finishes.)
