FANCY CUTS® SHINGLE

specifications

1. Product Description.

Number One Grade Western Red Cedar shingles, precision cut to 4-15/16" width (actual) x 18" (nominal) dimensions, in nine patterns, for application on roofs and exterior or interior sidewalls.

Patterns: Shakertown® Fancy Cuts shingles are available in the patterns shown at right.

Finishes: Manufactured in unfinished, natural Western Red Cedar only. Products may be stained or sealed in the field. (Refer to Technical Bulletin 4001, Stains and Finishes.)

Basic Uses: For exterior application on sidewalls or roofs, including mansard roofs, and for decorative texture treatment on interior wall and ceiling surfaces.

Limitations: Fancy Cuts shingles may not be used on roofs where slope is less than 4/12.

Composition and Materials: Shakertown Fancy Cuts shingles are composed of genuine Western Red Cedar shingles. Their insulation values of up to R-.87 are superior to most other structural siding and roofing materials.

Fire-Resistance: Class A ratings (ASTM E-84) are achieved with fire-retardant treatment. For roofing, Class C, B and A ratings (ASTM E-108) are also achieved through fire retardant treatment.

Dimensions: Shakertown Fancy Cuts shingles are 18" long (nominal) and 4-15/16" wide (actual). Note: Fancy Cuts shingles are also available in 8-foot panels. (Diamond not available in panels.)

Packaging: Shakertown Fancy Cuts shingles are available in cartons. Each carton contains 96 shingles.

Coverage: Each carton covers 25 sq. ft. of sidewall with a maximum exposure of 7-1/2". For roofs, shingles should not exceed a 5" exposure; carton coverage at 5" is 16-2/3 sq. ft. For interior application, carton coverage is 33-1/3 sq. ft. at a 10" exposure.

2. Installation.
Roof Application:

Sheathing - Red Cedar shingles may be applied over open or solid sheathing. Breather-type building paper may be applied over either type sheathing; although paper is not used in most applications.

Pitch and Exposures - Proper weather exposure is important. On roof slopes of 4/12 and steeper, the maximum exposure for Fancy Cuts shingles is 5".

Application - Shingles must be at least doubled at all eaves, and butts of first-course shingles should project 1-1/2" beyond edge-of-roof eaves. To maintain uniform 5" centering, shingles must be placed approximately 1/8" apart.

Hips and Ridges - All hips and ridges should be of the alternate overlap type, with concealed nailing. Be sure to use longer nails of sufficient length to penetrate the underlying sheathing at least 1/2".

Sidewall Application:

Application - Shingles are applied much as in roof construction, but a greater weather exposure is permitted. The standard exposure for No. 1 grade 18" shingles is 7-1/2". The shingles should be doubled at the foundation line. To maintain uniform 5" centering, shingles must be placed approximately 1/8" apart.

3. Availability and Cost.

4. Warranty.

Shakertown 1992, Inc. guarantees that all raw materials used in the manufacturing of Fancy Cuts shingles will meet or exceed applicable grading rules. When investigation of a reported problem identifies a defect which is attributed to manufacturing defects, Shakertown will repair or replace the material, at its option.

5. Maintenance.

Shakertown Fancy Cuts shingles, when properly applied, require little maintenance. The natural preservatives in genuine Western Red Cedar shingles make Fancy Cuts a very durable material. They will darken or change color at different rates, depending on the amount of direct sun they receive. On an interior wall, any section exposed to sunlight will change color, just as wood furniture, wallpaper or paint will. Shakertown recommends finishing with a quality oil-based stain to maximize the product life in outdoor sidewall applications. (Refer to Technical Bulletin 4001, Stains and Finishes.)
